Benzodiazepines Insomnia

One of the most prescribed sleeping medications for insomnia is Benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines is a type of hypnotics. Benzodiazepines is commonly used because they are better tolerated and less risk of dependency. However, they should only be used to prevent the vicious cycle of psychophysiological insomnia in short term insomnia when other non medical treatments have failed.

Benzodiazepines is originally used to treat anxiety as this drug reinforces a chemical in the brain that inhibits neuron excitability. Commonly prescribed Benzodiazepines include the following:

  • Long acting Benzodiazepines and medium to short acting Benzodiazepines. Short-acting benzodiazepines are particularly useful for air travelers who want to reduce the effects of jet lag.

As in any medications, side effects comes with taking Benzodiazepines. Some of the common side effects are :

  • This drug may cause depression, which is a common cause for people with insomnia.
  • Overuse may cause respiratory depression. The risk is higher for people with pre-existing respiratory illness.
  • Long-acting Benzodiazepines increase the risk of residual daytime drowsiness which is responsible for many automobile accidents and falls in the elderly. Short-acting Benzodiazepines do not appear to have the same risk.
  • Some people reported memory loss (or traveler's amnesia), sleepwalking, and mood swings after taking short-acting Benzodiazepines such as Halcyon. However, these effects are rare and often enhanced by alcohol.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding mothers should stay away from using Benzodiazepines at all cost as these drugs can cross the placenta as well as enter the breast milk. There seems to be a link to development of cleft lip with the use of Benzodiazepines in the first trimester.
  • In rare cases, overdose can lead to death.

The elderly are more susceptible to side effects and should usually start taking at half the dose prescribed for the younger people and should not be taking long acting Benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines is very dangerous if used in combination with alcohol. Some medications such as Cimetidine (an ulcer medication) can slow down the metabolism of Benzodiazepines.

Another potential risk is that this medication can be highly addictive. You may suffer from withdrawal symptoms when you stop taking this medication. Withdrawal symptoms indicates prolonged use and dependence. These withdrawal symptoms can last up to 3 weeks after stop taking the drug. Some of the common withdrawal symptoms include, gastrointestinal distress, excessive sweating, disturbed heart rhythm, and some may even suffer from hallucination and seizures.

Rebound insomnia often occurs after withdrawal , and this could be one or two nights of sleeplessness, daytime sleepiness and anxiety. The chances for rebound insomnia are higher than with the short acting Benzodiazepines than the long acting ones.
